A DAY IN RAMAYANA HANDICRAFTS
WITH HIV AIDS AWARENESS
On 17 Jan 2009, we conducted a session on STIs & HIV/AIDS awareness for the employees and staff of Ramayana Handicrafts (RH). Mr. Anil Lal, Manager from RH, Deepak, Shrabani and Vinod from AAG and staff of Ramayana Handicraft were present. Deepak introduced the AAG team and Drishtrantar team. Drishtantar group performed a street play on HIV/AIDS & STIs mixed with entertainment. They focused on the modes of transmission on HIV, How to prevent HIV infection; how it does not spread. The staff enjoyed the play. After the end of the street play, we displayed our flipcharts on their premises. The staff saw as well as read the explanations on our flipcharts.
Deepak our counsellor briefed the audience about HIV testing, myths, prevention and relation between STIs & HIV etc. through a street corner meeting. The session was very interactive. The participants asked a few questions –
- Can mosquito bites spread HIV?
- How can a child of HIV+ve parents can be HIV-ve?
- Is HIV spread through blade or shaving?
- How an HIV+ve pregnant mother can pass the infection to her baby?
- Is condom use 100% safe from HIV?
The counsellor answered all the queries. He conducted a condom demonstration to show how and when the condom should be used and after use how to dispose it. He explained the proper use and the triple benefits of condoms. At the end of the session we distributed IEC materials, pamphlets and condoms. Approx. 50 participants were present. |

A training session was conducted on HIV/AIDS in Prison Head Quarter at Tihar Jail. Dy Superintendent Mr. Bhatia introduced our team to the participants. Madam Elizabeth informed them about AAG’s activities in Tihar Jail. The participants were all Assistant Superintendents. Approx. 30 Asst. Suptds. participated.
We started the session with basic information on HIV. During this we disseminated information on Modes of transmission, Myths and Misconceptions, and prevention with the help of flip charts. They asked a few questions. They had doubts about getting infected after a mosquito’ bite. We explained the facts to them. In connection with HIV/AIDS we also made linkages between HIV & Drugs and explained to them about mother to child infection.
After the break we held a session on Attitudes and HIV/AIDS. We selected a card, read the statement and one by one they gave their views and dealt with the answers. It was good that most of them also knew about HIV/AIDS. We gave a condom demonstration. At the end we distributed HIV/AIDS booklets and pamphlets.

We held a training session on HIV/AIDS in Checkpoint Checknet India Pvt Ltd at their premises at Gurgaon. The Senior Executive of Purchase, Production workers, HR Manager & their workers participated. The Master Trainer asked a few questions to assess. The knowledge level of Workers which was good. Approx. 25-30 people attended the session.
The Trainers gave the information about Modes of Transmission, Myths & misconceptions, Prevention from HIV, Stigma & Discrimination, Attitudes on HIV and Positive living. Myths & misconceptions like going to a barber spreads HIV, symptoms of HIV, where HIV originated etc, what is the difference between HIV and AIDS.
A game was played by Elizabeth, where she shook hands with the participants. After this she disclosed that she is HIV+ (positive), we saw that a few participants were very scared. Most of the workers want to live separately from HIV+ve persons. It was a good discussion with them about stigma & discrimination and what about our Govt. scenario is. At end of the session they gave written feedback about the session. We distributed booklets, pamphlets & condoms to keep safe in future. |
